Creativity and Connection at Our Art for the Mind Session

Last week, our Memory Café at Edgware Library was filled with colour, conversation, and creativity as we hosted another uplifting Art for the Mind session. Guided by a talented local artist, around 14 participants came together to create beautiful 3D birds from felt and wool — and the results were truly wonderful!

These sessions are all about connection, creativity, and confidence. For many of our guests, it was the first time in years they had sat down to craft something by hand. As the soft textures of the felt and the colourful strands of wool came together, so too did stories, laughter, and shared memories.

“It was lovely to see everyone so engaged and focused,” said our artist facilitator. “Each bird had its own personality — just like its maker!”

For those living with memory loss or dementia, creative activities like art and craft are far more than just enjoyable — they’re deeply therapeutic.
Art stimulates the senses, encourages conversation, and provides a sense of achievement and calm. It also helps strengthen connections, both to familiar memories and to others in the community.

Our Memory Café sessions are designed to be a welcoming, safe space where people living with memory challenges — and their loved ones — can relax, socialise, and take part in activities that nurture both mind and mood. They’re also a chance to meet others who understand the journey, in a friendly and supportive environment.

At the end of the morning, our table was filled with a flock of bright, handmade birds — and even more importantly, with smiles and conversation.

“It’s amazing how something as simple as making art together can lift everyone’s spirits,” shared one of our team members. “There was a real sense of joy in the room.”

We’re so grateful to everyone who joined us, and to the staff at Edgware Library for their continued support.

Our Memory Café sessions are free to attend, and we’d love to welcome new faces. Whether you’re living with memory loss, supporting a loved one, or simply want to find out more, please get in touch to join our next event.
