Meet Amy
Amy had a couple of falls and hadn't been feeling herself, and her husband David was looking after her while running the house at the same time. It was becoming too much for one person. Since January, their Carer Melia has been coming in to help with the meals, the housekeeping and the company, and nine months on, one of the first things Amy and David mention is the Word Search puzzles.
Amy was born in South Croydon during the war and has fond memories of growing up there, including learning to ride a bicycle with her Dad, who taught her how to get going and keep her balance.
She has always enjoyed good company and she still does. A conversation, a cup of tea and somebody who isn't in a rush are what make a good day for Amy.
How Things Were Before
Amy hadn't been well, and then came the falls, which knocked her confidence. Their son had married and moved abroad by that point, so it all fell to David. He was doing the cooking, the washing up and the tidying while keeping an eye on Amy, and although he kept it going for a long time, it gradually wore him out. Looking after someone you love is tiring in a way that's hard to explain to anyone who hasn't done it, especially when there's nobody to share it with.
The family decided it was time to bring in some help. They took their time over the decision, looking at several homecare agencies and comparing them properly before choosing Right at Home.
The Support We Put in Place
Amy's care began in January 2026 with her Carer, Melia, and it was built around what Amy and David actually needed rather than around a standard package.
Melia prepares Amy's meals, which takes a daily job off David and has made a real difference to how Amy feels in herself. Eating well has helped her build her strength back up and feel steadier on her feet. Melia also keeps the house clean and takes care of the washing up, so the place stays as Amy and David like it without either of them having to think about it.
She helps with the smaller practical things too. When something goes missing around the house, and things do go missing, Melia helps to track it down. That might sound like a small thing to include, but when you've had a fall and you're already feeling less sure of yourself, not being able to find something can take the wind out of your whole day.
Amy also enjoys her Word Search. It started as something the two of them could do together and it's become the part of the visit they both look forward to. They sit down with a puzzle and work through it, chatting as they go. It may seem like a simple thing, but it's one of the reasons Amy and Melia know each other properly rather than politely. That's usually how companionship works in practice: you do something together until the conversation happens on its own.
How Things Are Now
David says he feels very much relieved because he isn't carrying it all on his own anymore.
Amy is happier and more confident, and she trusts the person coming through her door, which matters more than almost anything else when you're letting someone into your home. She's told Melia so herself.
"Melia, we trust you. We appreciate you very much."
Both of them say they count themselves lucky and feel blessed to have the support they have. Trust like that takes months to build, and it comes from someone turning up when they said they would, doing what they said they'd do, and treating the house as Amy and David's home rather than a place of work.
For Melia, the practical tasks are only part of the job. What matters just as much is being someone Amy is pleased to see, noticing when something isn't quite right, and being willing to go the extra mile when there's a need. The part of the work she finds most rewarding is the trust that has grown between her and Amy, and how much happier the house feels because of it.
