Frequently Asked Questions

What is a catheter?

A catheter is a soft, flexible tube that is used to drain urine from the bladder when someone is unable to do this naturally. It allows urine to pass safely out of the body into a drainage bag, helping to keep you comfortable and prevent complications.

Catheters may be used for a short time, for example after surgery, or longer term for certain medical conditions. With the right support, many people manage a catheter as part of their daily routine while continuing to live comfortably at home.

How much does catheter care cost in Central London?

Costs vary depending on the level of care needed. We offer tailored plans and a free assessment to help you understand the most suitable and cost-effective option.

You may also be eligible for financial support through Westminster City Council or Camden Council, depending on your financial circumstances and care requirements. We are happy to guide you through the options.

What happens if there is a problem with the catheter?

Our team is trained to recognise any concerns early and respond quickly, helping to prevent small issues from becoming more serious.

If something does not seem right, such as changes in comfort, urine flow or the way the catheter is working, we will take appropriate action straight away. This may include helping you stay comfortable, checking equipment, and following agreed care guidance.

Where needed, we will contact your GP, district nurse or wider healthcare team to ensure the right support is in place. With oversight from our Registered Nurses, you can feel reassured that any concerns will be managed safely, promptly and with your wellbeing as the priority.

Will my Care Assistant be trained in catheter care?

Yes. Our Care Assistants receive specialist training and are supported by Registered Nurses, ensuring care is delivered safely and to a high standard.

Can I still live independently with a catheter?

Yes. Many people continue to live independently at home with the right support in place.

Having a catheter does not mean losing your independence. With the right level of support, you can continue with your usual routines and daily life in a way that feels comfortable and familiar.

Our role is to support you where needed, while encouraging independence wherever possible. This might be help with certain parts of your routine or simply providing reassurance, so you feel confident managing day to day.

With consistent Care Assistants and support from our Registered Nurses, you can feel reassured that everything is being managed safely, allowing you to focus on living well at home.

What types of catheters are there?

There are a few different types of catheters, depending on your needs and how long support is required.

The most common types include:

  • Indwelling (urethral) catheter: a tube that stays in place in the bladder and drains urine continuously into a bag.
  • Suprapubic catheter: a catheter inserted through a small opening in the abdomen directly into the bladder.
  • Intermittent catheter: a catheter that is used at certain times during the day and then removed after use.

Your healthcare professional will advise on the most suitable type for you. Our Care Assistants are trained to support different types of catheter care, with oversight from our experienced Registered Nurses, ensuring your care is safe, comfortable and tailored to your needs.

Can you support after a hospital stay?

Yes. We can support you when returning home from hospital, helping you settle back into familiar surroundings with confidence.

We understand that coming home with a catheter can feel like a big adjustment. Our team is there from the start to help make daily routines feel manageable and reassuring.

We will ensure you have everything you need for ongoing catheter care, including the right equipment and supplies, and that you feel confident in how everything works. We can also liaise with your district nursing team and other healthcare professionals to make sure your care is joined up and continues smoothly after discharge.

Is catheter care at home safe?

Yes. With trained Care Assistants and oversight from our experienced Registered Nurses, catheter care can be managed safely at home.

We follow clear procedures and gently monitor for any changes, helping to ensure everything is managed correctly day to day.

Can family members still be involved in care?

Absolutely. We work alongside families, offering guidance and reassurance so you can feel confident and supported, while still being as involved as you wish.

Can you work with my GP or district nurse?

Yes, we work closely with your GP, district nurse and wider healthcare team to ensure your care is joined up and reflects any medical guidance.

What does a typical visit involve?

Each visit is tailored to you, but may include support with hygiene, emptying or changing drainage bags, as well as checking everything is working as it should. We also take time to ensure you feel comfortable and supported.

What does TWOC mean?

TWOC stands for Trial Without Catheter. You may read this on medical records, such as discharge papers following a hospital admission.

A trail without catheter is a planned process where your catheter is removed to see if you are able to pass urine naturally again. This is often arranged by your healthcare team after a period of using a catheter, for example following surgery or illness.

Your GP, nurse or hospital team will guide you through this process and let you know what to expect. Our team can support you during this time, helping you feel comfortable and reassured at home.

Do you offer overnight or 24-hour care?

Yes. We provide flexible support, including overnight and live-in care, for Clients who need more continuous assistance.
