- Esther's Story
Meet Esther
Esther is a warm, resilient 75-year-old who enjoys sharing stories about her early life in Nigeria before moving to the UK.
Sadly, Esther was involved in a serious accident, and she spent several months in hospital, including two weeks in a coma and an extended stay in intensive care. Despite the challenges she faced, Esther remained determined to regain her independence and return to life at home once the doctors told her it was safe to do so.
When Esther was discharged, she was living with diabetes and kidney disease, requiring dialysis three times a week. Her mobility was extremely limited, and she relied on a wheelchair to get around. She also needed significant support with personal care, medication, health monitoring, meal preparation, and rehabilitation while recovering.
Esther and her family knew it would be incredibly difficult to ensure she had all the support she needed on a daily basis without outside help. That’s when they contacted Right at Home Central London.
Creating a Personalised Care & Support Plan
Working with Esther, her family, and healthcare professionals from the clinic she had stayed at, we designed a seven-week package of care. With two Carers supporting each visit, Esther received safe, effective care tailored to her specific requirements.
Each morning, our Carers monitored her blood sugar and blood pressure, assisted with personal care, prepared meals tailored to her dietary requirements, and ensured she took her medication as prescribed.
Throughout the day, we provided companionship, maintained a clean and comfortable home environment, supported her attendance at dialysis appointments, and encouraged regular physiotherapy and mobility exercises to help rebuild strength and confidence.
Consistency was an important part of Esther's care. One of our Carers, Laurencia, supported her throughout much of her recovery, taking time to understand her routines, preferences, and the little details that mattered to her. Whether it was preparing meals the way she liked them or sharing conversations about her life in Nigeria, this continuity helped build trust and ensured every member of the care team could provide truly person-centred support.
Getting Back Confidence & Independence
Over the course of seven weeks, Esther made remarkable progress. With encouragement from Laurencia, she showed more self reliance each day, slowly returning to her usual daily routines.
She progressed from needing a wheelchair for bathroom access to walking there herself with only minimal physical assistance. As her strength improved, so did her confidence and independence when it came to everyday activities. Witnessing how far she had come provided reassurance not only for Esther, but also for her family.
Beyond the physical improvements, the companionship she received played an important role in her recovery. Daily conversations with our Carers, who she had come to trust and enjoy spending time with, helped make her rehabilitation a positive and motivating experience and prevented the feelings of isolation that are common during rehabilitation.
"Caring for Esther was a truly rewarding experience. Spending most of her recovery journey with her allowed me to understand her individual preferences, from her personal care routine to how she liked her meals prepared. Building that relationship meant we could deliver consistent, personalised care while helping other Carers provide the same high standard of support. Watching her progress from using a wheelchair to walking with minimal assistance was incredibly rewarding, and seeing her confidence grow each day made it all worthwhile."
