A Journey Years in the Making

At 87 years old, Martina has spent a lifetime exploring the world. Travel has always been one of her greatest passions, and a long-awaited trip to London was especially meaningful. She had carefully planned every detail, and she was particularly excited about finally attending the world-famous Chelsea Flower Show — something she had been dreaming about her whole life.

Martina is an independent and adventurous person and she was excited to make the most of every moment.

But shortly after arriving in London following a long-haul flight, she experienced a medical emergency that seemed likely to ruin her trip, and caused extreme worry for both her and her family.

Organising Care & Support Within Hours

Martina suddenly became immobile while staying alone in a hotel that was not equipped to meet her changing needs. Unable to move safely and in considerable pain, she faced an uncertain situation in an unfamiliar city.

Thousands of miles away, her children were understandably distressed. Feeling helpless from overseas, they urgently needed someone they could trust to ensure their mother was safe, received prompt medical attention and, if possible, didn't have to abandon the trip she had been looking forward to for so long.

Within hours of receiving the referral, Right at Home Central London was by Martina's side.

A Rapid Response When It Mattered Most

Our team immediately carried out a comprehensive risk assessment and supported Martina to access urgent medical care to manage her pain. Recognising the importance of acting quickly, we coordinated an MRI within 48 hours, helping secure an accurate diagnosis and allowing treatment to begin without unnecessary delays.

We also arranged more suitable, accessible accommodation and ensured Martina's daughter could stay nearby after travelling to the UK, giving both mother and daughter reassurance at a worrying time.

Throughout Martina’s recovery, Sarah, our Managing Director and an experienced Registered Nurse, provided compassionate daily support tailored to her needs. This included mobility and chest exercises, wound care, assistance with virtual neurology appointments, help with everyday tasks and emotional support for both Martina and her family overseas.

Every decision centred around one goal: helping Martina recover safely while preserving the holiday she had travelled so far to enjoy.

Making it to the Chelsea Flower Show

Attending the Chelsea Flower Show had been one of Martina's lifelong ambitions, but following her sudden loss of mobility, it seemed increasingly unlikely that this dream would become reality.

Determined not to let her illness define her experience, our team arranged a wheelchair and carefully planned every aspect of the outing to ensure it was both safe and enjoyable.

Instead of watching her dream slip away, Martina was able to attend the Chelsea Flower Show. With the right support, Martina could get the full flower show experience, taking in the gorgeous displays and gardens, and learning more about horticulture.

As Martina's pain was brought under control and her confidence returned, she was able to continue enjoying her London trip, getting to all her other planned events with support from a Carer, before eventually travelling home safely.

For her family, knowing she was supported by compassionate professionals throughout her stay in London brought invaluable peace of mind during an incredibly stressful time.

The Difference Responsive Home Care Can Make

Martina's story demonstrates the life-changing impact of responsive, coordinated care delivered when it matters most.

By working in partnership with local healthcare services and responding quickly to an unexpected medical crisis, we helped transform what could have been a frightening experience into one filled with reassurance and hope.

In the end, Martina didn't have to give up on the trip she had dreamed of for so long. Instead, she returned home with the memories she had hoped to make, safe in the knowledge that, even far from home, compassionate, person-centred care was there when she needed it most.
