Stepping with confidence: Tips for fall prevention

Published: 16/02/2024

Staying in or avoiding activities may seem like the best way to prevent a fall, especially if you’ve already had one, but there are healthier and less isolating ways that can help you improve your balance and be steadier on your feet. Thanks to some helpful advice and information on the Age UK website, we’ve pulled together a list of  tips to help improve your confidence and prevent falls.

  1. Reach out for help: This is probably the most important and one of the hardest steps to take. Acknowledging that you’re feeling a bit unsteady can be difficult, but speaking to a trusted Doctor, Carer or Family member can help to alleviate your worries and set you on a path to remain independent for longer.

  1. Keep active: Contrary to what you might think, moving and keeping active can go a long way to maintaining your mobility. Regular movement and exercise can build up your strength, balance and coordination, helping to prevent falls. Just remember to wear sensible footwear!

  1. Eat healthy and stay hydrated: Whether you prefer small, healthy snacks throughout the day or three square meals, eating well helps keep your strength up. Ensure your diet contains essential nutrients like calcium and vitamin to maintain healthy bones and don’t forget to drink plenty of fluids to help avoid dizziness and feeling lightheaded, both of which can increase your risk of falling.

  1. Look after your eyes and ears: Your sight and hearing play important roles in keeping you balanced and on your feet. Be sure to get regular check-ups and wear your eyeglasses and hearing aids if you need them.

  1. Make your home fall-proof: When it comes to building confidence in your mobility, feeling safe at home is essential. Be sure to keep high traffic areas like hallways and stairs clear and avoid trip hazards like rugs or mats. If you need to get up in the night, consider using a motion activated light to guide your way. Non-slip mats and handrails can also help give you extra balance.
