Meet Alison - Carer & Mental Health First Aider At Right at Home North Leeds, Otley & Horsforth
Alison is one of our kind and dedicated Carers here at Right at Home North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth. She proudly supports clients across the local area, offering friendly and reliable care as a support worker and care assistant. Alison is also our Mental Health First Aider, providing compassionate emotional support to both clients and colleagues.
Why are you passionate about working for Right at Home North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth?
“When I retired from teaching, I wanted to work for a company that genuinely cared about people. Right at Home North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth came out top of my search for a new employer. Having looked after elderly relatives and hearing from friends about the need for quality care services, I knew this was where I wanted to be. The company is friendly, inclusive and encourages staff to develop their skills.”
Tell us a bit about your background
Born in Hull, Alison spent 14 years living in Sheffield before moving to Leeds in 2014. She worked as a teacher in large primary schools in North Sheffield and later in Specialist Inclusive Learning Schools in Wakefield, Bradford and Leeds. Now retired from teaching, Alison brings her patience, empathy and people skills to her role as a carer. She has three adult children and three grandchildren.
What inspired you to pursue a career in care?
“Life has given me plenty of opportunities to care for others, and I’ve always found it rewarding. People often tell me that I’m patient and kind, and I’ve discovered that caregiving is something I do well and love doing.”
What do you find most fulfilling about your role as a Carer?
“The people. I enjoy engaging in conversation and helping others find joy in shared experiences - whether it’s a day out, a chat over tea or simply making someone smile.”

What does a typical day look like for you as a Support Worker?
“No two days are ever the same! You’ll often find me out on the Leeds Ring Road or down quiet country lanes, heading to visit clients. My days are full of variety - helping with daily tasks, sharing laughter, offering support and being there for both the joys and the sorrows.”
Can you share a memorable moment from your time as a Care Assistant?
“Facilitating a relaxing foot soak, being with someone at the end of their life, or taking a client somewhere new and seeing their delight - these are moments I’ll never forget.”

Best advice received: “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.”
Recent lesson: “How to slow down - one client often reminds me - ‘Don’t rush’” when I do errands for them.
Hidden talent: “I used to play the trombone!”
Favourite way to unwind: “Relaxing with pitta bread, hummus and a cup of tea while watching TV in my favourite chair.”
Hobbies & interests: “Spending time with my family, knitting, crochet, sewing, gardening, reading, walking, going out for lunch and practising my faith.”
If stranded on a desert island, I’d take: “A garden fork (useful), some nice soap (a little luxury), and a book about foraging (I love food!).”
