Why Karla Loves Caring at Right at Home, North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth
Dedicated to providing person-centred care with a smile
Hi, I’m Karla, and I’m a Carer at Right at Home North Leeds, Otley and Horsforth. I joined in October 2024, but I’ve been working in care on and off for 18 years, balancing my career with raising my children. I trained as a hairdresser when I left school, so I’ve always been a people person, but I can honestly say that "care work is the most fulfilling job I’ve ever had".
I’m passionate about care because it’s not just about meeting basic needs - it’s about helping people live with dignity, purpose, and independence. That’s what motivates me every single day.

What Karla Finds Most Fulfilling About Working in Homecare
One thing you’ll always see me doing is smiling - I believe a simple smile can brighten someone’s day and make a real difference. I love being able to make someone smile or laugh at least once in their day, and I’m very good at adapting to each client and their needs - whether that’s having a quiet coffee and chat or planning a fun-filled day out with lots of giggles, perhaps a trip to a garden centre, theatre or pony sanctury.
I also find that Right at Home’s training is the best I’ve ever come across. Recently I completed Huntington’s training, which was fascinating and helped me understand the condition massively, giving me confidence to provide the best support possible.
Karla | Carer - Specialising in Huntington's Disease"Care work is more than a job - it’s about making someone’s day brighter, helping them live independently and always sharing a smile"
A Typical Day for Karla
Karla’s day-to-day role includes:
- Supporting clients with personal care (including assistance with catheters and stomas), prompting medication, assisting with fresh meal preparation and domestic tasks
-
Engaging clients living with dementia in activities that support cognitive and physical wellbeing
-
Adapting to each individual client, depending on how they are feeling - from relaxed chats to fun outings
-
Applying her specialist knowledge in Huntington’s care to ensure clients’ needs are fully understood
Outside of Work
When she’s not at work, Karla enjoys spending quality time with her family, making memories on holidays and fun days out. You’ll often see her on the sidelines at her son’s football matches or getting slightly muddy at the yard with her daughter.
Three words to describe Karla and her approach to care at home: Compassionate, Adaptable, Positive
