Winter Wellbeing: Staying Safe and Healthy at Home
Practical ways to stay safe, healthy and connected when the weather turns cold

Staying Safe and Healthy at Home
Winter can be a beautiful time of year, but colder weather, shorter days and seasonal illnesses can sometimes make everyday life a little more challenging. With a few simple steps - and a helping hand when needed - it’s possible to stay safe, comfortable and well throughout the winter months.
Top tips for staying safe and healthy:
Keep warm
Dress in layers, keep warm blankets close to hand, and make sure your home is kept at a safe, comfortable temperature.
Stay gently active
Light indoor exercise or short walks can help maintain strength, balance and circulation, supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing.
Eat well and stay hydrated
Nutritious meals and regular fluids help maintain energy levels and support overall health - especially during colder weather.
Look after your health
Keep up with medications, attend appointments where possible, and don’t hesitate to contact your healthcare provider if you have any concerns.
Prevent slips and falls
Wet or icy conditions can make outdoor surfaces hazardous. Wear sturdy footwear, use handrails, and ask a neighbour, friend or family member for help with clearing paths if needed.
Protect against illness
Regular handwashing and staying up to date with recommended flu and COVID-19 vaccinations can help reduce the risk of seasonal illness.
Stay connected
A friendly chat with friends, family or your care team can lift spirits and reduce feelings of isolation. Even a quick call or visit can make a real difference.
If you notice signs of illness, or feel unusually cold, weak, dizzy or unwell, let your Carer or family know and seek advice from a healthcare professional.
