My Career in Care

My Career in Care lets you see the people behind Right at Home Solent. Theresa Martin is off to a flying start. She has swapped years of experience in an office to start her career in care. Theresa’s clients and colleagues love her. This is her story and why she hasn’t looked back.

I joined Right at Home Solent in September 2020, having been made redundant. I worked for an electrical mechanical engineering company. But, it’s surprising what transferable skills you have for a career in care. I handled bookings for gas servicing and installation. And so, I could bring existing customer service skills. In addition, I learned to organise my time. Both are useful in the role of a caregiver.

A couple of years ago, I would have laughed about starting a career in care. The thing is, being a caregiver is the most rewarding job you can have. I adore my clients. I want to go above and beyond. It’s about making a difference every day.

In fact, when I saw Right at Home’s Recruitment Advert it was fate. I spotted it on the Home Care website and I knew I needed to apply. Many of my family work in the care industry. I already knew how rewarding it can be.

What is more, when I went to an interview with Kev, he was so calm and friendly. A bit like talking to an old friend! I had not had an interview in eight years and I was proper nervous! But, within seconds, I was at ease and the interview was fabulous.

I was a bit anxious though. I hadn’t done a caring role before. It meant I didn’t have all the skills I needed. However, Right at Home Solent enable you to feel confident. Their training is top-notch. You get to learn so much, and you participate in hands-on training. It meant I could feel confident in my career in care. Out in the community with clients. I am loving my role.

As a result, I can make a difference in my clients’ day. I help them to live as independently as possible. It feels great I can do this. I see the smiles on their faces when I arrive. It feels amazing. We go for a walk or take the dogs out. This isn’t something they can do on their own, so it makes a big difference. We love chatting and putting the world to rights!

It isn’t just my clients that make work so enjoyable. It’s my colleagues who are supportive and friendly. The culture of Right at Home Solent is fantastic. They treat you as a person, not a number. It’s like a second family. My work family. You are listened to and treated with respect. The office team support you in any way possible as well.
