Right at Home Solent are supporting Mountbatten Hampshire. Sponsoring their Sunflower Walk. I am volunteering at the event, taking place on Sunday 4th July 2021. The Sunflower Walk has a remembrance garden. And you can fundraise and, remember loved ones.

Mountbatten Hampshire.

Located in West End Southampton, Mountbatten Hampshire is our local hospice. They offer inpatient care, home support, day services and bereavement support. I first met the staff over 25 years before on placement in palliative care. And I found it challenging but rewarding. Many inpatients were reaching the end of their life. And they wanted to share precious moments with family and friends in comfort. The palliative support patients receive is end-of-life care.

 What is Palliative Care?

Palliative care focuses on you and not your condition. It doesn’t treat your illness. But, manages your pain and helps you to feel comfortable. The main principles are about:

Who is it for?

The care is for people with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions. You may need support for a few days, weeks or, even, several years. Meaning:
  •   Remaining as comfortable and pain-free as possible with end-of-life care.
  •   Comforting your symptoms of chronic illness.
  •  Relieving possible side effects of your treatments. Cancer drugs, for example.

Where Can You Have It?

You can choose to have end-of-life care at home with family and friends. But, you can receive palliative care in other settings, such as:

Returning to Mountbatten Hampshire.

I visited Mountbatten Hampshire recently. As  Right at Home Solent is a  regular sponsor of their events. Chatting to a patient on their beautiful grounds, I am struck it is the same friendly place I remember.

I am Rachel. I work as a Community Engagement Officer at Right at Home Solent. Supporting Mountbatten Hampshire is my way to say thank you to our CareGivers and remember my loved ones.
