We are Members of the Carers Charter!
Published: 29/04/2025
Right at Home Mid Cheshire are now Members of the Carers Charter working in association with Cheshire West & Chester Council
What is the Carers Charter?
The Carers Charter is a set of principles for organisations to sign up to and demonstrate their intention and commitment to support unpaid carers across the borough.
The purpose of the Carers Charter is to recognise, support and empower unpaid carers within the community through local organisations signing up. The Carers Charter sets out a range of principles designed to raise awareness of unpaid carers, improve access to local support services and resources for carers, promote flexibility in workplaces and community spaces to accommodate carers’ needs and to recognise carers’ rights.
The Carers Charter is being hosted by Cheshire West and Chester Council and has been coproduced with people who have lived experience of being an unpaid carer and local partners.
Who does the Carers Charter Support?
In 2021, it was identified that Cheshire West and Chester have 32,638 unpaid carers across the borough and continues to increase. Cheshire West and Chester Council’s Carers Charter aims for organisations to come together and through the Carer Charter principles acknowledge and represent their intention and commitment to support unpaid carers and the essential role they have.
An unpaid carer can be anybody of any age who may care for a family member, friend or neighbour who can’t manage without the support of the unpaid carer due to illness or disability. Many people provide care without realising they are an unpaid carer.
Unpaid carers have certain legal rights that include access to financial, practical and employment support.
Examples of unpaid carers can include:
- a child up to the age of 18
- any adult aged 18 or over
- a person working, training for work or studying full-time or part-time
- a person who has retired, perhaps because of their caring role
- someone who isn’t in employment, perhaps because of their caring role
- a parent caring for a child who is ill, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems
- someone who has a care need or disability themselves that might be visible or hidden

Support for Carers
There are many definitions to describe Carers and the caring role. The Carers Trust defines a Carer as anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member who due to illness, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction cannot cope without their support.
If this applies to you, there is a range of support available and Carers Rights that you may not be aware of.

Carers Assessment QR Code
If you follow the QR Code on the right, you can complete The Carers Assessment. This will then evaluate your situation and your needs as an unpaid Carer.
The Chester West Carers Support Service will then point you in the right direction and give you the support you may need.
