Introduction: More Than Care A Commitment to Community

At Right at Home Solent & Southampton, we believe that great care isn’t limited to the home, it extends into the heart of the community. Beyond personal support, we want to offer something different; this involves connecting with others, understanding their needs, and building strong, trusting relationships within the community.

Recently, we proudly joined The Big Green Picnic, a national initiative in partnership with Dementia Adventure that brought people together for a joyful celebration of nature, companionship, and care. This event wasn’t just about food and fun, but it was a chance for clients and residents to get into the community, connect with others, and enjoy nature in a setting designed to stimulate the senses.

A Real Moment of Joy at Templeton Place

One of the highlights of our involvement took place on 19th June at Templeton Place Care Home, where the spirit of the Big Green Picnic truly came to life. The day was filled with laughter, music, and genuine connection.

We had a live singer, whose warm, familiar tunes brought smiles to everyone’s faces. Alison, one of our dedicated team members, led a beautiful planting activity that invited participants to engage with nature in a hands-on, calming way.

To stir up conversation and memories, we created a memory board filled with old photographs and provided nostalgic books that sparked storytelling between clients and carers. It was a warm, sunny day, so we made sure to keep everyone refreshed with a hydration station, and to top it all off. An ice cream van stopped by much to everyone's delight.

It was a small event in size but big in heart, just the kind of local moment that reminds us how powerful care can be when it’s personal.

Why Community Involvement Matters

Loneliness can significantly impact the quality of life for individuals, especially among older adults and those living with dementia, affecting their ability to engage in daily activities and maintain social relationships. And to reduce this, we need events like The Big Green Picnic.

At Right at Home Solent & Southampton, we don’t just provide home care, but we strive to uplift the whole person. That includes:

•    Celebrating each individual’s story
•    Fostering real relationships, not just client-carer interactions
•    Raising awareness around ageing and dementia
•    Encouraging inclusive communities

Being present in the local community builds trust. It shows families that we’re not just a service provider; we’re neighbors, friends, and active contributors to community well-being.

Real Stories from the Big Green Picnic

A great example came from Bishop’s Stortford, where Right at Home partnered with Meadowbrook Care Home. The event included live singing, a flower-arranging workshop, and refreshments donated by local cafés and shops.

What made it memorable wasn’t just the music or the food, it was the way people came together. Clients, family members, carers, and local volunteers all shared smiles and stories. It was a reminder of what happens when we make space for connections.

Events like this build more than memories; they also build community bonds.

Local by Nature, Personal by Choice

At Right at Home Solent & Southampton, being local isn’t just about geography, but it’s the heart. Our team is made up of people who live in the same communities we serve. They know the streets, the local cafés, the familiar parks, and even the small talk that makes our region special.

This local presence matters deeply, especially when providing care. Because when someone receives support from a carer who understands their culture, language, and surroundings, that care becomes more than professional, but it becomes personal.

We make the personal choice to go beyond the basics of care. Instead of just showing up to complete a task, our carers build real relationships. They remember favorite foods, offer companionship during lonely afternoons, and treat every client as the unique individual they are.

What’s Next: Continuing the Spirit of Summer

Events like The Big Green Picnic had a significant impact, and because of this, we are eager to explore new ways to bring people together.

Whether it’s seasonal gatherings, educational workshops, or simple meetups, our team is dedicated to creating more meaningful moments.

The support of several local businesses makes the event possible and ensures everyone attending has an enjoyable day.

Are you a local café, charity, or community leader? Let’s join forces to support people in ways that are joyful and dignified.

Final Thoughts: A Deeper Kind of Care

At Right at Home Solent & Southampton, we regard our role not merely as a duty, but we see it as something deeper. It’s the connection that matters most to us. We want to help people to feel:

Seen in a world that can overlook them
Heard when their voice may feel quiet
Included in a community that values them

That’s why our work doesn’t stop with care plans. It includes real relationships, joyful moments, and partnerships that make life richer.

The Big Green Picnic is just one example of how we live this mission, and we can’t wait to do more.
