What Is a Care Advisor?

Making decisions about care can raise lots of questions. You may be unsure what support is available, what happens next, or who to speak to when circumstances change. Having someone to guide you through the process can make things feel much more manageable.

At Right at Home Guildford & Farnham, our Care Advisors provide families with free personalised guidance when they need it. We can help you understand your situation, explore the next steps and navigate the different services and support available across health and social care.

Every family’s circumstances are different, so our approach is centred around listening first. Whether you’re at the beginning of your care journey or need help making sense of changing circumstances, we’re here to provide straightforward guidance and practical support.

Our aim is to give you greater clarity around the forms, funding and your options - helping you move forward feeling informed and reassured about the decisions ahead.

How Care Advisors Can Help

Knowing where to start can make all the difference when care is needed quickly. Our Care Advisors, Rhys and Jenny, can help you explore your options and, where appropriate, support you in arranging care within 24–48 hours, helping to avoid unnecessary delays while waiting for lengthy assessment processes.

We can also arrange a free, no-obligation care assessment at home, giving our team the opportunity to understand your individual needs, answer your questions and meet you in a familiar environment.

Our advisory service can also help families make the most of the support available to them. This includes providing up-to-date information about non-means-tested benefits such as Attendance Allowance, including practical guidance on contacting the helpline early to establish a date stamp for potential backdated payments.

The Care Advisors can also provide information and signposting to specialist resources and organisations. This may include the Admiral Nurse Dementia Helpline and Dementia Adventure, helping families find additional guidance, support and opportunities within their local community.

Understanding How Care Can Be Funded

Paying for care can bring a whole new set of questions, particularly when you’re trying to understand what financial help may be available. The way care is funded depends on individual circumstances, including your financial situation and the level of support you require.

A financial assessment, commonly known as a means test, is used by your local authority to establish whether you may need to contribute towards the cost of care. In England, the £23,250 upper capital threshold is an important figure to be aware of when considering eligibility for local authority financial support. Understanding the assessment process and whether you may be responsible for funding your own care can help you plan ahead with greater clarity.

There are also different forms of NHS support to be aware of. NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) is based on an assessment of an individual’s healthcare needs rather than simply their diagnosis. For people with rapidly deteriorating or end-of-life needs, the Fast Track Pathway may provide a quicker route to accessing NHS Continuing Healthcare.

"We launched our Care Advisors so families don't have to work all of this out on their own. The team continuously stays up to date with their knowledge on how care is funded and what help is available, so we can give clear, accurate information quickly, when people need it most."

The Next Steps

After every conversation, our Care Advisors will send a clear follow-up email summarising the key information discussed. We understand there can be a lot to take in at once, so having everything in writing gives families the time and space to read through it at their own pace and refer back to it when needed.

The email from the Care Advisors will include helpful links and clear contact details, alongside any relevant information discussed, such as funding options and thresholds, suitable care options, community support and home adaptations.
