The Grumpy Mole, Cheam

Brief history of the area

Cheam Village dates to 1018 when Chertsey Abbey owned the area and it was also featured in the legendary Doomsday book. In 1538 Henry VIII took control of Cheam. In 1801 at the time of the first census Cheam had a population of 616. By 2011 the population had increased to 10,285.

St Dunstan’s Church dates from Saxon times, the chancel of which is still standing in the church yard.  The churches of St Alban’s and St Oswald’s were built in the first half of the twentieth century to serve the rapid growth of housing and population in the local area.

The Lumley Chapel is one of the last surviving remnants of the medieval village of Cheam and remains a focal point. Replaced over 150 years ago the chapel is the former chancel or sanctuary of the old pre-Victorian parish church.

Cheam Park House was built in the 19th Century. It was known locally as Bethell House after the family that lived there until 1937. Cheam Park was bought by the Council and used as a factory to assemble Gas Masks between 1939 and 1940. It was also used as a first aid station and a warden’s post. Like neighbouring towns, the house was badly hit by a flying bomb during the World War 2. It was demolished shortly afterwards.
