Brief history of the area

Epsom Downs forms part of the North Downs, distinguished by its porous chalk making it very suitable for the racing and golfing activities that it is famous for.

Epsom Downs is home of The Derby, the world famous, Classic horse race that has been drawing international and royal visitors since its inauguration in 1780. It is the most coveted prize for both owner and jockey and draws many visitors to Epsom Downs and the surrounding areas over the Derby week.

On the south side of the Grandstand are the gallops and open spaces shared with the local community, ramblers, model aircraft flyers, dog walkers and cyclists. To the North, Epsom Downs is also home to Epsom Golf Club, a private members club that shares the Downs with the public. There are bylaws for the use of the Downs, and the Jockey Club and Epsom Conservators share the responsibility of managing the area on behalf of the racecourse and public. There are panoramic views of London to the north from the Downs. The area is served by Epsom Downs and Tattenham Corner railway stations.

Did you know?

Horseman’s Sunday was founded in 1947 by the horse breeder and author Reggie Summerhays. Riders of all ages and carriage drivers ride over the Downs before assembling for a short religious service. They then take part in the parade raising hundreds of pounds for charities. Brass bands used to lead the parade, which also featured the famous Harrods horses and Young’s Brewery team.
