Brief history of the area

Epsom has a long history with health care. It is where Epsom Salts, known for its medicinal qualities was originally found in Epsom Common. Its prestigious schools were founded to help the widows of medics and its famous hospital cluster has shaped the skyline of Epsom.

Epsom salts are today one of the things that puts Epsom on the international map, first found in 1618, long before The Derby was first run. Charles II was among those who regularly took the waters and several prominent writers, including Samuel Pepys, John Aubrey, and Celia Fiennes recorded their visits.

Epsom College, the prestigious public school was originally founded in 1851 by Dr John Propert to establish a school to help widowed medical families, naming it The Medical Benevolent College.

Did you know?

The hospital clusters in Epsom have shaped the demographics in Epsom growing from a small village in medieval times, to a thriving multi-cultural town. It is first recorded as Ebesham in the 10th century. The modern settlement probably grew up in the area surrounding St Martin's Church in the 6th or 7th centuries and the street pattern is thought to have become established in the Middle Ages.

Today the High Street is dominated by the clock tower, which was erected in 1847–8, surrounded by the popular market that has expanded over the years and alternates themes between antiques and delicatessen from around the globe.
