Carew Academy, Wallington

Brief history of the area

Wallington’s name derives from the Anglo Saxon "Waletone", meaning "village of the Britons". Wallington appears in the Domesday Book of 1086 and was held by William the Conqueror.

The area has a thriving school district, with highly rated grammar schools including Wilson's School being one of the highest achieving state schools in the country. Wallington High School for Girls, was established in 1888.

Carew Academy, which has an Outstanding Ofsted rating, is situated opposite Beddington Park, next to the historic St Mary's Church. The Manor House was the home of the Carew family for over 500 years from 1352-1859, a noble family of Norman descent.  Sir Nicholas Carew was the cousin of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII is said to have visited the manor when they were courting. Elizabeth I, Sir Walter Raleigh and Jane Seymour are all said to have ties to Beddington and Carew Manor. Beddington Park was also owned by Walter Raleigh when he married Elizabeth Throckmorton of Carew Manor. Queen Elizabeth I visited him there and both of their ghosts are said to haunt the area.

Did you know?

Wallington was an important centre for lavender oil production until about the time of the First World War. Lavender and herb growing were very prominent in the area in Victorian times and much earlier, and extensive fields of lavender were to be seen in the Carshalton, Beddington and Wallington areas. Lavender growing was a very prosperous part of the local agriculture hereabouts in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
