Innovative Ways of Recruiting and Retaining the Workforce

Last week, the team from Right at Home Cardiff and Newport had the privilege of attending the Gofal Cymdeithasol Cymru / Social Care Wales Accolades 2026, where we were honoured to be shortlisted in the category Innovative Ways of Recruiting and Retaining the Workforce.

This category celebrates organisations, settings or projects that use effective, creative and innovative approaches to developing the workforce to meet current and future demands and expectations.

At Right at Home Cardiff and Newport, to support recruitment, we have developed strong partnerships with local colleges and universities, offering work experience to students who are interested in working in the sector.

We were nominated for this award due to the hard work of our dedicated Mental Health Lead, Stephanie Jones, who curates personalised support that has helped build an 85 per cent staff retention rate. Staff are encouraged to share their concerns and ideas and are given lots of opportunities to complete extra training and qualifications, with additional workshops for staff supporting people with complex needs. We also have an internal awards ceremony which recognises staff’s hard work, and office coffee mornings and well-being activities keep staff engagement high.

Being shortlisted was a fantastic achievement in itself and a reflection of the incredible culture our team has built and our commitment to attracting, developing and retaining the very best people in care.

While we didn't take home the award this year, we are incredibly proud to have been recognised among such inspiring organisations! A huge congratulations to Chwarae Torfaen/Torfaen Play for taking home the award. This project offers inclusive, high-quality play provision and respite services for children and young people in Torfaen. To build a strong and sustainable workforce, Torfaen Play Service recruits volunteers from the local community, reaching out through schools, colleges and social media. And to make sure the application process is accessible to everyone, it offers hands-on support with completing applications, DBS checks and references. Their commitment to building an inclusive and sustainable workforce is truly inspiring!

The event itself was also a brilliant example of inclusion and accessibility being put at the heart of everything. It was wonderful to see BSL interpreters, bilingual Welsh and English presentations, live translation through headphones, and subtitles on videos, ensuring everyone could fully participate and enjoy the celebration.

Thank you to Social Care Wales for hosting such an uplifting event celebrating the amazing people and organisations making a difference across Wales!
