Supporting Our Clients in Warmer Weather. A Guide to Staying Safe, Comfortable, and Happy
As the sun shines brighter and temperatures begin to rise, it's important to remember that warmer weather brings not only sunshine and joy but also some health considerations, especially for older adults and those receiving care at home. At Right at Home Cardiff & Newport, we’re committed to helping our clients stay safe, comfortable, and well throughout the summer months.
Here are some key ways we’re supporting our clients and some tips families can follow too:
Staying Hydrated
Dehydration can happen quickly, especially in the heat. Our CareGivers gently encourage regular sips of water throughout the day, even if clients don’t feel thirsty. We’re also adding hydrating foods like fruits (watermelon, strawberries) and light soups to mealtime where possible. Families can support this at home by keeping water within easy reach and offering drinks regularly.
Keeping Cool Indoors
We’re making sure clients’ homes stay as cool as possible—closing blinds or curtains during the hottest parts of the day, using fans if needed, and encouraging clients to sit in shaded, ventilated areas. A cool flannel or mist spray can also provide soothing relief on warmer days.
Dressing for the Weather
Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing in breathable fabrics like cotton can make a big difference to comfort. We assist clients in choosing weather-appropriate outfits and encourage wearing hats or using sunshades when heading outside.
Safe Outdoor Time
Fresh air and sunshine are great for wellbeing, but we’re mindful about timing outdoor activities to avoid peak sun hours (usually between 11am and 3pm). When outdoors, we help apply sunscreen, ensure hats are worn, and encourage plenty of water breaks.
Monitoring for Heat-Related Illnesses
Our team keeps a watchful eye for signs of heat exhaustion or heatstroke, such as dizziness, headache, confusion, excessive sweating, or clammy skin. If we notice anything concerning, we act swiftly and seek medical advice as needed.
Checking In Regularly
We know that sometimes warmer weather can make people feel more tired or unwell. We’re making sure to check in with clients more frequently, encouraging rest, and adjusting care plans if needed to prioritise comfort and safety.
A Team Effort
Supporting our clients through the summer is a team effort, and we encourage families, friends, and neighbours to stay connected and check in on their loved ones. If you’re concerned about someone’s wellbeing in the heat, don’t hesitate to reach out to us for advice or support.
Together, we can ensure everyone enjoys the sunny season safely and comfortably.
