How Right at Home prioritises person centred care with Magic Moments
At Right at Home Weybridge & Richmond, we believe that delivering high-quality care goes beyond supporting Clients with daily tasks. It is equally important to create meaningful, person-centred experiences that bring joy, promote independence, and strengthen the relationship between Clients and Carers.
Recently, we were delighted to share a special “Magic Moment” with our Client, Isobel C. Isobel’s family had requested a six-hour companionship visit, and with a focus on creating a fulfilling and enjoyable experience, Sylwia planned an outing tailored to Isobel’s interests - particularly her love for art, drawing, and painting. Although an initial plan to visit an art gallery had to be shelved due to accessibility restrictions with a non-functioning lift, Sylwia adapted the plan to ensure Isabel's enjoyment and wellbeing remained the priority.
This is the story of how a change of plan led to a truly memorable day of connection and creativity.
Adapting the Plan: From Gallery Visit to Riverside Picnic
To ensure Isobel’s needs were met while still prioritising a joyful experience, her Carer quickly pivoted from the gallery visit to organising a riverside picnic. Taking full advantage of the sunny weather on Sunday, 19th April, Sylwia prepared a picnic basket with a variety of delicious foods. The outing was made possible by Isobel mobilising independently using her electric scooter, which gave her the freedom to choose a nearby riverside location.
Adding to the occasion was Isobel's beloved dog, Percy, who accompanied them and is an important source of comfort and companionship for her.
The change in venue demonstrated the value of adapting care to overcome barriers, ensuring that accessibility issues do not detract from a Client's opportunity for meaningful engagement. The goal was simple: to create an opportunity for conversation, reflection, and a deep connection with nature, which contributes positively to Isobel’s overall wellbeing.
This flexible, person-centred approach is a core part of how Right at Home Weybridge & Richmond delivers care.
Meaningful Moments: Enjoying Nature and Companionship
The two and a half hours spent by the river were filled with simple but meaningful activities. The Carer and Isobel shared a relaxed picnic, which included prawn cocktail sandwiches, salmon pâté, fresh fruit, cheese and crackers, Turkish delight, and lemonade. Isobel particularly enjoyed feeding the various birds, including swans, geese, ducks, and seagulls, which created a sense of active participation and connection with the local environment.
This shared experience provided a perfect opportunity for conversation and reflection, fostering a deeper bond between Isobel and her Carer. It was clear from Isobel’s engagement and positive mood that the experience was deeply meaningful to her. Seeing her smile and relaxed demeanour throughout the outing underscored the immense value of tailoring activities to suit individual preferences, confirming that simple moments can be the most profound.
The success of the picnic highlighted how companionship visits are about creating happiness and lasting memories, not just filling time.
Reconnecting with Purpose: The Portrait Session
The magic continued upon returning home. Sylwia gently encouraged Isobel to reconnect with her passion for drawing, an activity she had not engaged in for some time. Isobel readily agreed and kindly offered to draw a portrait of Sylwia. The Carer sat as her model while Isobel completed the drawing, demonstrating focus, creativity, and enjoyment. The experience visibly enhanced Isobel’s sense of purpose and self-expression, allowing her to use her talents in a meaningful way.
After completing the artwork, Isobel proudly signed it. Sylwia expressed appreciation by sharing that the portrait would be framed and kept as a valued memento. This act of creative engagement underscored the central role that hobbies and self-expression play in emotional wellbeing and independence.
By overcoming the initial disappointment of the gallery visit and facilitating two distinct, joy-filled activities, Sylwia ensured that the six-hour visit was productive, supportive, and profoundly personal.
“Experiences like this not only enhance quality of life for our Clients but also create lasting, positive memories for both the Client and Carer.”
