Celebrating a Special Birthday with Person-Centred Care

A birthday 'Magic Moment' proves the power of person-centred care for emotional wellbeing.

Carers Create Special Birthday Magic Moment

At Right at Home Weybridge & Richmond, we know that quality dementia care is about more than just assisting with daily tasks. Promoting emotional wellbeing, maintaining independence, and strengthening the bond between Client and Carer through meaningful, person-centred experiences is equally vital. This commitment was beautifully demonstrated during a recent morning visit with our lovely Client, Robin.

Knowing it was her birthday on April 20th, Client Sylwia wanted to create a truly special "Magic Moment." Sylwia arrived prepared with flowers, a card, cupcakes, and Robin’s favorite hot chocolate, aiming to make her feel cherished and glamorous for the day. The entire visit was an illustration of how small, thoughtful gestures can profoundly enhance the quality of life for those we support.

A Surprise That Sparked Genuine Joy

When Robin came downstairs, her husband Charles and Sylwia welcomed her by singing “Happy Birthday.” Robin was genuinely surprised, exclaiming, “I didn’t know it was my birthday today!”. As Robin lives with dementia, she does not always retain awareness of dates, making the moment of genuine joy even more poignant.

After ensuring Robin ate breakfast comfortably and took her medication, the celebration continued. Sylwia presented her with a cupcake, encouraging her to make a wish and blow out the candle, which she did with a lasting smile. Because Robin is unable to read independently, Sylwia gently read her birthday cards aloud to ensure she felt valued and included. They shared cupcakes and her favourite oat milk hot chocolate.

“Spending time with Robin celebrating her birthday and letting her know she is loved and cared for is just one of the reasons I love being a Carer.”

– Sylwia | Carer, Right at Home Weybridge & Richmond

Person Centred Care For A Relaxed Visit

Sylwia captured a few photos with Robin's permission, including a lovely moment with her and Charles together, showing how truly happy and relaxed she was. To maintain a calm and soothing atmosphere, they sat in the living room and, instead of the usual news, Charles played classical music, which Robin thoroughly enjoyed.

The personalised approach meant that for the entire visit, Robin remained smiling, relaxed, content, and notably less confused. It was incredibly rewarding to witness how thoughtful, personalised care can positively impact someone living with dementia.

"This ‘Magic Moment’ highlights the power of person-centred care. Small, thoughtful gestures can bring immense joy, support emotional wellbeing, and create meaningful connections."
