Riding 134km on Classic Steel

Scott Takes On the Legendary Eroica for Dementia Adventure

Riding Retro for Dementia

At Right at Home, we believe that a dementia diagnosis shouldn’t mean the end of living a rich, active, and adventurous life.

That’s why we are thrilled to share an extraordinary challenge being undertaken by Scott, who is putting his endurance and a classic vintage road bike to the ultimate test to raise money for a cause close to all our hearts.

This year, Scott is tackling the legendary Eroica Medium Route: a grueling 134-kilometer (83-mile) cycling event across the demanding terrain and unpaved gravel roads of Tuscany, Italy.

What Makes the Eroica Ride so Tough?

The Eroica isn't your standard charity cycle. It is a grueling tribute to the "heroic age" of cycling, where modern technology is left at the starting line:

  • Classic Steel: Scott will be riding an authentic, pre-1987 vintage road bike. That means no carbon fiber frames, no electronic shifters, no disc brakes, and no modern low gearing to lighten the load on steep climbs.

  • 134 Kilometers of Endurance: Hours of continuous pedaling over steep hills, testing grit, stamina, and leg power to the limit.

  • The "Strade Bianche": Long stretches of Italy’s famous white gravel roads, demanding non-stop concentration, balance, and resilience.

Scott is riding to raise crucial funds and awareness for Dementia Adventure, a brilliant national charity whose mission aligns seamlessly with our core values at Right at Home.

Dementia Adventure works to help people living with dementia get outdoors, connect with nature, and retain a sense of freedom and independence. They deliver supported holidays, outdoor group activities, and practical training for family carers, proving that access to nature and fresh air brings immense health, cognitive, and emotional benefits.

At Right at Home, our caregivers see firsthand how transformative getting outside can be for our clients. Whether it’s a short walk in a local park or an afternoon spent in the garden, staying connected to nature boosts mood, reduces anxiety, and enhances overall well-being.

By taking on 134km of gravel dust and steep hills on an old steel bike, Scott is helping ensure more families can experience that vital freedom.

Scott’s training is well underway, and every bit of encouragement helps keep the momentum going during those long training rides on heavy vintage gear!
