Beth
Carer for Team Guilford
Beth joined the Right at Home family in the summer of 2023 to compliment her university degree, as our flexible working patterns allowed her to still concentrate on her studies! Beth brought with her a heap of experience, as she worked part-time in a dementia focused nursing home throughout college, and then full time during her gap year - which happened to be the pandemic! She is a credit to the Guildford team and really does make a difference everyday.
What motivated you to pursue a career in caregiving?
"I’ve always loved working with people, and started working in healthcare from a young age. My mum is a nurse, and she’s always been a big inspiration!"
What inspired you to join Right at Home?
"I’d heard of Right at Home through both a client and a previous employee, who both spoke of the company with such high regard. I was told about the ‘no strangers’ policy, and this really said all I needed to know about the company from a care perspective; it seems a small thing but spoke volumes as to how much the client’s experience is valued."
What does a typical day look like for you?
"I really like to maximise my working days as much as I can, so I’ll usually start at 7am and finish between 9-10pm. I usually have a couple of hours off in the afternoon, where I grab a coffee and chill before my late afternoon/evening care calls."
What do you find most rewarding about your role?
"The little things - lifting somebody’s mood with the smallest interaction, having a chat with a client over a cup of tea, or hearing about their life experiences."
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement?
"There are so many, but it’s always the little things that have carried the biggest impact. I was caring for a lovely client who was very sadly end of life; she was discharged from hospital back home where she wanted to be, and we had the privilege of caring for her in those final weeks. She was a lady who was always so put together and always looked amazing; we washed her hair for her in bed after her long stint in hospital, and the transformation to her mood was amazing. She felt like herself again and it’s a moment I’ll never forget."
What are your interests or hobbies outside of work?
"Dog walks, baking and playing the piano."
Do you have any pets? If so, what?
"A red setter called Rusty! He’s a rescue & has been a challenge (it’s in his nature) but also the biggest joy!"
What’s your hidden talent that (until now) most people don’t know about?
"If I don’t set an alarm I can sleep into the next day."
If you were stranded on a desert island, which three items would you want to have with you and why?
"Fruit and nut Dairy Milk, a fridge (because chocolate can only ever live in the fridge) and tea. I can survive anything with those magic three!"
