Singing for the Mind – Fleet, the incredibly popular singing group for people with dementia and their carers, has moved to a new and bigger home. Attendees hope new participants will join them at their weekly sessions which are held on Tuesdays at 2pm for refreshments followed by singing from 2.30-3.30pm at The Key Centre at Elvetham Heath.

“Singing for the Mind has become very popular because the participants, who include people living with dementia as well as their carers, absolutely love it. So it’s great news that we’ve now got a bigger venue with better parking,” says Hayley Thaysen from Right at Home GF who sponsor the group.

“Singing can be highly beneficial to people with dementia – as well as enormous fun – and a valuable social opportunity for them and their carers. We have noticed, for example, that people who have been unable to speak find that they can sing and people with severe mobility difficulties find pleasure in being able to follow actions to songs. If you or a loved one has dementia, please do consider coming along – we would love to see you.”

Singing for the Mind is run by professional singer and musician, Paul Tickner. He begins each session with a vocal warm up and some seated exercises designed to get people moving their body. He then uses well-known uplifting songs, which he chooses especially for the session, to keep energy levels high to maintain people’s attention as well as introducing simple actions to help stimulate the left and right side of the brain and encourage coordination.
