Free talk for families wanting to know more about the early signs of dementia

Right at Home GF is hosting a free dementia awareness and experience session and is inviting anybody who has noticed subtle changes in a loved one’s memory, behaviour or daily routines over Christmas to come along for support and guidance.
The talk will be given by dementia advocate Alastair Shanks who is the Managing Director of four local branches of the home care provider Right at Home and trustee for the charity Dementia Adventure. Commenting on his personal experience of the condition, he says: “Prior to my grandfather developing dementia around 15 years ago I had very little understanding of this disease. I didn't know the difference between Alzheimer's and dementia, I didn't know how it affected people and if I had met someone with the condition, I wouldn't have known what to say to them. My personal experience has driven my interest and passion for making life better for those living with dementia whether that be individuals who have been diagnosed with the condition or their family and friends.”
During his talk, Alastair will give an overview of dementia, the impact it has on individuals and families, how to communicate and tips on creating dementia-friendly environments.
He says: “Christmas can be a time when families see changes they hadn’t noticed before. Common signs include increased forgetfulness, confusion about time or place, changes in mood or personality, difficulty managing everyday tasks, or withdrawal from conversations and social activities. While these signs do not always indicate dementia, recognising them early can make a significant difference.”
As well as hearing the presentation, guests will have the opportunity to take part in an immersive experience which simulates the physical and sensory challenges faced by people living with dementia. By attempting everyday tasks such as laying a table or making a bed whilst wearing vision-distorting goggles, weighted clothing, and headphones playing background noise, participants will gain insight into how dementia affects daily life.
The dementia awareness event takes place on 29 January from 11am to 1pm at Right at Home GF’s office at Runfold St George, Farnham, GU10 1PL. To book your free place, visit https://shorturl.at/SgM8y or call 01252 783426. Everybody is welcome.
