From Bed Bound to Bicycle: Marley's Inspiring Journey to Independence

How person-centred care, community support and determination helped Marley rediscover freedom and confidence through cycling.

Published: 24/06/2026

Introduction

At Right at Home Guildford & Farnham, we believe that great care is about much more than supporting daily needs – it is about helping people achieve their goals, build confidence, and live fulfilling lives. Marley's story is a powerful example of what can happen when person-centred care, determination, and community spirit come together.

When Marley first joined our service, she was bed bound and socially isolated. Years of difficult experiences had affected her confidence and trust in others, making everyday activities feel overwhelming. Through patience, kindness, and a tailored approach to care, Marley gradually began rebuilding her independence. What followed was an extraordinary journey that ultimately saw her achieve something she never thought possible – riding a bicycle again for the first time in decades.

Building Confidence Through Person-Centred Care

Marley's progress began with small but meaningful steps. Our Carers focused on building trust and supporting her at a pace that felt comfortable. Over time, she began spending more time out of bed, sitting in her chair and engaging with the world around her.

As her confidence grew, so did her independence. Marley started using an electric wheelchair, accessed her local community more regularly, and gradually took greater control of her daily living activities. Her care needs reduced significantly, and she embraced new opportunities including attending activities, joining a gym, swimming, and participating in dance classes.

During regular visits with Registered Manager Adriana, conversations often turned to cycling and the freedom it can bring. These discussions sparked childhood memories and reignited a long-forgotten passion. Marley began talking about riding a bike again – a dream that initially seemed out of reach but quickly became a goal worth pursuing.

Building Confidence Through Person-Centred Care

Rather than focusing on the barriers, the team focused on the possibilities. Together, we explored ways Marley could cycle safely and confidently. A three-wheel bicycle was identified as the ideal solution, providing stability while allowing her to enjoy the independence of cycling once more.

The project gained momentum when a generous gentleman from Millbrook donated a tricycle. Although the bike required extensive restoration, colleagues, family members, and community supporters came together to make Marley's dream a reality.

Vicky's partner volunteered his time to completely respray the frame, helping create a fresh new look chosen especially for Marley. Meanwhile, Adriana's husband undertook the mechanical restoration, sourcing parts, carrying out repairs, and ensuring the tricycle was safe and roadworthy. What began as an old donated bicycle was transformed into a beautifully restored tricycle designed with Marley in mind.

To make the occasion even more memorable, the team organised a surprise reveal. Marley was invited to the office for what she believed was simply a coffee visit. When she arrived and saw her newly restored tricycle waiting outside, her reaction was unforgettable. At 40 years old, she experienced the joy and freedom of riding a bike again.

"Seeing Marley's reaction when she realised the bike was hers was incredibly emotional. It reminded us that great care is about helping people achieve what matters most to them and never giving up on their ambitions."

– Adriana Mendonca | Registered Mendonca

For Marley, the tricycle represents far more than a way to get around. It symbolises years of progress, resilience, and personal achievement. It has encouraged physical activity, strengthened confidence, improved wellbeing, and created new opportunities to engage with her community.

Her journey from being bed bound and isolated to cycling again demonstrates the life-changing impact of person-centred care. It also highlights what can be achieved when families, care professionals, volunteers, and local communities work together towards a shared goal.

At Right at Home Guildford & Farnham, we are incredibly proud to have been part of Marley's journey. Her story serves as a powerful reminder that with the right support, encouragement, and belief, even the most ambitious goals can become reality.
