Homecare Matters: The Podcast - Episode 3

Discover how local community groups are helping people feel connected, active and included.

Published: 26/08/2026

Community at the heart of Right at Home

Community has always been an important part of our approach to care. What started with a single Sunflower Café in Farnham has now grown into a programme of more than 10 regular community events across the local area.

The groups are designed to bring people together, offering opportunities to socialise, make new friends, stay active and enjoy activities in a welcoming and inclusive environment. They are open to older people, people living with dementia, their families, carers and anyone who could benefit from greater social connection.

The impact of these groups is the focus of the latest episode of Homecare Matters: The Podcast. Hosted by Head of Marketing & Recruitment Liz and Digital Marketing Executive Ella, Episode 3 explores the different groups available, what people can expect when they attend and why community connection can make such a positive difference.

From singing and movement sessions to relaxed coffee mornings, the programme offers something for everyone.

How community groups can support connection

For many people, attending a regular community group becomes an important part of their weekly routine. It can provide something to look forward to, while creating opportunities to meet familiar faces, try new activities and build friendships.

This can be particularly valuable for people living with dementia. Social interaction and meaningful activities can help people maintain confidence and stay connected with those around them. Rather than focusing on what someone may no longer be able to do, our community groups focus on participation, enjoyment and what people can do.

The programme includes groups such as Sunflower Café, Singing for the Mind and Love to Move, alongside other facilitated, hosted and sponsored community events across the areas served by Right at Home Guildford & Farnham. The aim is simple: to create welcoming spaces where people can come together, feel included and enjoy spending time with others.

What can you expect from the community groups?

If you have never attended one of our community groups before, you may be wondering what to expect. The good news is that there is no need to have any previous experience or particular skills.

The groups are designed to be accessible and welcoming, with attendees encouraged to participate at a level that feels comfortable for them. Whether you want to get involved in an activity, meet new people or simply enjoy a cup of coffee and a chat, there is no pressure to do anything you do not feel comfortable with.

As discussed in the latest podcast episode, the groups are about much more than keeping people busy. They create opportunities for meaningful connection and can help people feel part of their local community.

Community has always been at the heart of what we do. Our groups are about bringing people together, creating friendships and making sure everyone feels included and valued."

For families and carers, these groups can also provide an opportunity to discover local activities that their loved one may enjoy and become more involved in the wider community.
