Starting the Conversation About Homecare: How to Approach It with Your Loved One

At Right at Home, we understand that talking to a loved one about homecare can feel overwhelming and even a little daunting. But it’s important to remember that homecare is about supporting your loved one, and enabling their independence. With the right care in place, your loved one can continue to live comfortably and safely at home, surrounded by familiar surroundings and special memories.

We’ve put together some helpful tips to guide you through this important conversation:

Start The Conversation Early

The best time to talk about homecare options is before there’s an urgent need; starting the conversation early gives your loved one time to consider their needs and preferences, and to take part in making decisions. They may be open to accepting a little help, whether it’s companionship or help with household tasks... Starting small can make it easier to increase care later if needed, while knowing your loved one is already in safe hands.

Have Compassion

Bringing up the conversation about homecare with a loved one can be difficult for the both of you, but explain why you have suggested the conversation about homecare as you believe that they would be more independent, with having some additional support, and would be able to spend more time doing the things they love! By approaching the conversation with compassion it shows that you are concerned and as a loved one, want to help.

Listen

It’s just as important to listen as it is to talk -  give your loved one the space to share how they feel about receiving extra support. Hearing their concerns, and acknowledging them, can help build trust and make them more open to the idea about receiving some support through homecare They might even agree to our, in-home, free assessment with one of our friendly team members, where you can both talk through some of our homecare services.

Be Patient

Understandably, your loved one at first may be against the idea of having some extra support and that's okay... However, it doesn't mean that it's the only conversation that you will have about it as you can gently remind them the benefits of homecare as time goes on.
